Embracing the Curl You're In

Today, Shea Moisture the popular natural-inspired beauty brand, release a controversial product commercial video, many women with curly hair were not pleased with... As a Black woman with curly hair, I do not understand why many are upset by this video. Shouldn't ALL Women have the right to embrace their natural beauty and the skin they're in? The reason why I purchase Shea Moisture products, is not because I'm Black, it's because their products do not contain harmful ingredients are natural and organic, and better for my body. When Shea Moisture first started their, now world-wide business, they did appeal to Women of Color however, Women of Color are not the only ones on this planet with textured hair. I may be in the minority however, I stand with Shea Moisture's decision to market their products to ALL Women. If you support different causes such as, Black Lives Matter, All Lives Matter, #LoveWins, and many others, how can you not support all women of different races, cultures, and ethnic backgrounds with curly hair?

  1. Thank you for your comment on the new ad. I am white with type 3b 3c curls and have never felt like I fit in. I am constantly told I need to have normal hair, which people seem to think is straight hair. I am the only one in my family with curly hair so it has been a real struggle for me to figure out how to care for my hair properly. People are just so mean these days. I have been told my skin is the wrong color for my hair, and I should straighten it or get a tan. To help me learn how you care for my hair is went to a black owned salon first a trim and I was told they don't serve my kind there. I was in tears when I left feeling like I wasn't excepted by any one. It's so nice to hear you say race doesn't matter. I wish everyone would see that. I see so much racism it's unreal. All life matters. I do agree though that certain people misjudge and don't feel that black lives matter. But they definitely do matter!! Hopefully one day everyone will be created equally.

    1. Hi,

Thank you for your input, curly hair comes in many shapes, sizes, and colors. Hair products should not be categorized by race/gender. There are many brands beside Shea Moisture that have a large following with men, women, and children. When you think of the makeup industry, they're ultimate goal is to reach a wider population of people. I like to purchase beauty products that meet my needs instead of being race specific.
