#GirlBoss --The Best Book I've Read in 2014 (Book Review) + Thoughts

Growing up as a young girl, I did not like being told what I could and could not achieve. Gender roles did not exist in my household. My mother made it clear to me, that I should aspire to be smarter than my peers, regardless of gender (male or female). Should girls and women aspire to become leaders?  What does it mean to be a #GirlBoss? In Sophia Amoruso's founder and creator of Nasty Gal online boutique (now with a flagship store) iconic "hashtag" titled self-help book #GirlBoss. She preaches to women everywhere, with ambitions and goals. Amoruso defines a #GirlBoss as "someone who's in charge her own life" (Amoruso, 2014). Like most typical young teens and young adults, Amoruso was broke and the first thing she sold online, wasn't fashion, it was actually stolen books.

Women are often scrutinized and stereotyped for having dreams that go against the societal norms. This book has become a way of life for many women like myself, with a go-getter attitude and lifestyle. Amoruso started her business in 2006, out of her 1 bedroom apartment, using eBay as her "marketing" engine for selling fabulous and unique clothing to  eager customers. Prior to becoming Founder and CEO of NastyGal, Amoruso held several jobs and positions in her young adult days, and even experienced being fired and surfing through trash cans. When you have faith and believe in a particular idea, it's only natural to just "go with" it. NastyGal started off as a one woman show. Today, NastyGal is a $100 million-dollar company with more than 350 employees. In Amoruso's book, she gives her readers outstanding advice and tips for growing and starting a business from scratch. What makes this book different? It gives the 20-something year-old women tangible information, along with the encouragement to believe in their dreams, despite what society has to say. Women are leaders and deserve respected recognition!

My Thoughts

Sometimes, as women we are told we are not allowed to kick ass in the workplace. #GirlBoss indefinitely proves modern society to be wrong! Women can be bosses in every sense of the word. Being a boss should be confused with being bossy. A boss is someone who is a confident leader in their own right. Women have came a long way since the feminist movement. We are often at times head of households and CEO's of large women-powered businesses. Women like Sophia Amoruso, shake up the world, while giving people something to think about. This a great book to read for any woman who is interested in starting her own business, interested in fashion, or is just looking for inspiration and motivation for making positive changes in life!
