Tips for Creating the Best Twist Out Ever! ♡

Style: Bantu Knot Out w/ Perm Rods
Hello ladies,

Twist outs are one of the most popular hairstyles worn by women in the curly-hair community. Many women, including myself like to wear twist outs for various reasons. Twists outs allows one to wear their hair in a stretched out style, with minimal shrinkage. Some have even said twist outs allows them to moisturize their hair better throughout the week. Twist outs include 2 strand (sometimes 3) twists, bantu knots, and flat twists. I won't include braid outs because I find that they create a different effect on the hair but closely related to a twist out. Twist outs for some have the ability to reduce shedding, breakage, and knotting of the hair, due to the hair being stretched, instead of free forming curls. Continue reading for my fabulous tips on how to achieve the best darn twist out ever!

  1. Start out on clean, conditioned, detangled hair
  2. Part your hair off to your liking (e.g.. side or middle part)
  3. Apply a moisturizing leave-in conditioner or hair cream. (I'm loving Shea Moisture's Yucca and Baobab Thickening Growth Hair Milk)
  4. Seal your hair with a light oil or hair serum. (I like to use Argan Oil or Mielle Organics Mint Almond Oil)
  5. Begin twisting your hair (2 strand or 3 strand twists, flat twists, bantu knots, etc)
  6. Small Twists = Tight Ringlets, Medium/Large Twists = Looser curls/waves
  7. For more of a Curly Sue look, add rollers, flexi rods, perm rods, etc. to the ends of your hair, a la CurlyNikki! (paying homage)
  8. You can air dry your hair or sit under a hooded dryer for 30 minutes to 1 hour (depending on how long your hair takes to dry) * You can air dry the rest of your hair if you do not want to sit under the dryer long
  9. Make sure all of your is completely dry before taking down your twists!
  10. Apply oil or serum to your fingertips while undoing the twists to prevent frizz
  11. Separate the curls and lightly fluff your hair to prevent parts from showing
  12. Volia! You're done! - Retwist nightly or pull hair into a high/low ponytail to maintain the style weekly
